Contributing Writer

Evan Purney is a Canadian photographer based out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Film is his preferred medium due to the near-unlimited opportunities to experiment with the process. Whether it’s done while shooting, developing, scanning, or editing, he is fascinated by how slight adjustments can affect the final image. In his daily life, Evan works from home as a software engineer, with his two feline co-workers, Zeus and Hazel. On the weekends he enjoys going on little adventures with his partner, taking photos of anything that catches his eye.

  • Experimental film photographer who aims to share his techniques and results with the world
  • A career software engineer, pursuing photography on the side out of love for the medium
  • Loves to capture the mundane and present it in an interesting way

Evan started his journey with photography in the summer of 2021, after visiting home and looking through some old photo albums prompted him to start capturing similar moments of his own. He realized he never took the time to sift through the countless pictures on his phone and craved something a bit more intentional. This is what prompted him to shoot film, and he started right away with a disposable camera.

Since 2021, Evan has fully immersed himself in the world of film photography. He strives to try as many film stocks as possible and develops and scans everything himself to gain more control over the end result. Once he tests out a new film, he’s always looking for ways to experiment with it to create interesting results, sharing his process and results on social media.

In 2019, Evan graduated from The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB, Canada with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. While he loves his field of study and continues to work full-time in the industry, Evan craved an artistic outlet. After experimenting with many different mediums through the Covid-19 pandemic, he finally found photography in 2021 and hasn’t looked back since!

Favorite photography subject

Being a huge fan of punk music and culture, Evan aims to bring his own DIY spin to photography, embracing the imperfections of his process rather than trying to hide them. This style is complemented by his favorite subject—the mundane and the everyday that he experiences living on the Canadian east coast.
